Conn McDunphy (Lucan CRC) has extended a very successful run on home roads this year with victory in the main event at the Sliabh Luachra Clasaicí today. McDunphy was first reserve for Team Ireland at the UCI World Road Championships in Glasgow today and when he was not called up for that race he made the best of his form in Knocknagree, Co Cork, instead.

The 26-year-old, who rode for EvoPro Racing last year, made the initial 10-man breakaway after about 20km of racing today. However, with that group quite large, the attacks continued from it and McDunphy made his solo bid for victory a long way out.

He got clear alone with about 55km to go to the finish and was chased for a long time by Luke Smith (Moynalty CC). However, while Smith kept the lone leader at about 30 to 40 seconds for a lengthy period, the elastic eventually snapped on the final lap, of seven, on the 16km course.

McDunphy went on to take a clear win on his own, with Smith 2nd and Patrick O'Loughlin (Panduit Carrick Wheelers) placing 3rd from Dermot Radford (Black House Racing), Michael Storan (West Clare CC) and Joel Luke (UCD Cycling Club).

More to come.
