Bryan McCrystal (Bellurgan Wheelers) has motored to the gold medal in the Masters 40 race at the Irish Masters Road Race Championships in Co Mayo today.
McCrystal, who was formerly a top A1 rider before going back to triathlon-Ironman, has been back in the domestic peloton this year and riding very well.
And today the Co Louth man really made it count with nothing short of a monster ride in the Masters 40 event, one of the three title races down for decision today in the west.
He was three minutes up on his own headed for the line, in that 'big power' TT mode he is known for. And once he was away, and was into this rhythm it was all over.
He ran out the victor from Barry Meade (O'Leary Stone Kanturk) and Thomas Anthony Quaid (Foran CT).
In the Masters 50 race, former multiple national champion on the road and in cyclocross, Alan Bingham (Inspired Cycling) took the title after he was best from a breakaway from Derek Joyce (Galway Bay CC) and Dermot Radford (Black House Racing).
The Masters 60 title went to another man who is no stranger to the top of the podium at these championships; John Madden (Inspired Cycling) adding the road race crown to the TT title he took yesterday. Gerard Horan (Velo Club Balrothery) took silver and Brian Reynolds (Unattached) claimed the bronze.
More to come.
