Darragh McCarter (Spellman Dublin Port) took a solo win at the Castlebar GP in Co Mayo today after getting clear of a four-man front group.
Mark O’ Donovan (Blarney), Ronan Grimes (Orwell) and Richard Gibbons (Seven Springs), whom McCarter had attacked and gotten clear of, arrived at the finish about one minute after the lone leader to sprint it out for the placings. O'Donovan got the verdict, for 2nd place, from Grimes and Gibbons.
The race today was a handicapped affair, with the A3s given a two-minute head start. It was a difficult catch-up game for the A1 and A2s, due to the windy hard roads, though they made the catch about 20km into the race.
The winning four-man breakaway managed to get clear on the first passage of the main climb about 45km into the contest. McCarter then made several attempts inside the final 20km to go clear alone, with an attack about 7km from the finish proving successful.
He survived out front for victory ahead of the three-man chasing group, with a second group - of rider riders - then sprinting for 5th place, with Tom Regan (Seven Springs CC) winning that gallop.
