Colin Clavin (Streamstown Cycling Club) and Hazel Smyth (Kinning Cycles) have won the 'Masters 40 Men' and 'Masters Women' titles respectively at the National Masters TT Championships in Co Monaghan today, Saturday - full results and times below.
There were eight national titles - and obviously eight sets of medals - down for decision on TT race day as Masters are split into five-year categories rather than being grouped, as before, into categories spanning a decade in ages.
However, despite there being Masters 40 and Masters 45 races today, for example, Clavin was still fastest of all the male competitors over the 24.4km distance today, though his time of 30.08 claimed the Masters 40 title by just one second in what was a hard fought contest.
For her part, Smyth, no stranger to serious performances against the watch, clocked a time of 36:30, winning gold by 1:50 and clocking a time that would have secured her a bronze medal in the Masters 40 title race on the day.
Clavin claimed the Masters 40 gold by one second from Eoin Bailey (Carlow RCC) while Michael Redden (Donegal Bay CC) rounded out the podium in a time of 38:56.
In the combined Masters Women category, Smyth topped the podium by 1:50 from Aisling Barry (Dunboyne CC). Karen Hull of Phoenix CC was 3rd, with a time of 38:27, just seven seconds slower than Barry, in the title race at Ardaghy, Co Monaghan, promoted by Emyvale CC.
More to come.
