Dunbar impresses in big company, Evenepoel (19) stuns in San Sebastián

Remco Evenepoel wins Clásica Ciclista San Sebastián (1.UWT), his first ever one-day WorldTour race, at the aged of 19 years. Ireland's rising star Eddie Dunbar also enjoyed a very strong showing

Remco Evenepoel has won Clásica Ciclista San Sebastián (1.UWT), his first ever one-day WorldTour race, at the age of 19 years.

The young Belgian, who won the junior worlds road race and TT titles less than a year ago, attacked before the final climb and built enough time to win it from the group of favourites.

Ireland's Eddie Dunbar (Team Ineos) also rode very well in collecting 15th place in the WorldTour race.

Dunbar just missed the chasing group that formed over the top of the final climb of the day after the lone leader.

Immediately after that final climb, and with 9km down into the finish, a chase group of about seven formed some 40 seconds down on Evenepoel.

That group eventually swelled to 14 riders and Eddie Dunbar was next on the road, less than 30 seconds behind them and chasing down the group on his own.

In the end Evenepoel won solo for Deceuninck-QuickStep by 38 seconds from the chasing group, which shed a couple of riders in the closing kilometres.

Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team) got the sprint for 2nd place with 20-year-old reigning world U23 champion Marc Hirschi (Team Sunweb) in 3rd.

Eddie Dunbar was 15th, some 56 seconds down on the winner and just 18 seconds down on the group sprinting for 2nd place.

Evenepoel had been dropped on the penultimate climb but battled back on. He then collected bidons from the team car to distribute to his team mates as Enric Maes was the fancied rider among them.

However, when Toms Skujiņš (Trek-Segafredo) attacked with about 20km to go, Evenepoel went after him.

There was a muted response in the favourites' group and the two leaders pulled out 50 seconds.

While the attacks from the chase group began on the final climb, they had left it too late, with Evenepoel dropping Skujiņš on the steep final ascent and soloing in to win.

Aside from Eddie Dunbar's very promising ride, Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) looked below par and was distanced on the last climb.

He eventually finished in 32nd at 2:24. Nicolas Roche (Team Sunweb) finished in 59th at 8:57.
