Reilly leads in McCrystal and Shaw for ASEA blitz in Fermoy

Team ASEA has recorded a remarkable 1-2-3 at the Dan O’Donovan Memorial in Fermoy this afternoon, with Chris Reilly taking the honours and Bryan McCrystal all but sealing victory in the National Road Series.

The race was the 14th round of the relaunched series and the Dundalk man came into the race with a slender lead on a clutch of chasers.

McCrystal did not necessarily need to score highly today, but the fact none of those immediately behind him took points means it will take a lot to stop him now.

It was a day for the aforementioned Reilly to celebrate, however, as he has been one of the team's unsung heroes all year.

Last weekend he claimed the King of the Mountains jersey at the Suir Valley Three-Day for the second year running but his win today probably trumps that.

The winning trio had been away from a very early stage of the 10-lap, 100-kilometre, race this afternoon with Robin Kelly (Waterford Racing Team) and Mick Fitzgerald (Strata3-VeloRevolution).

The quintet worked well but Shaw was obviously feeling strong and he jumped away with Robin Kelly for company.

Though the five regrouped, with around 30 kilometres remaining the ASEA trio took flight and were not seen again.

Kelly and Fitzgerald battled away behind and took fourth and fifth, respectively, with Connor Hennebry taking sixth.

The emerging Hennebry jump away in the closing kilometres from the group he was in to take 6th solo.

Just behind, Michael Crowley (Osbourne Meats-McCarthy Cycles) led in what was left of the bunch.

Local man Dion McCarthy (Zanatta-Lotto) took a very convincing bunch-sprint win in the A3 race while Padraig Walsh (Comeragh CC) was victorious in the A4 race.
