Sean McKenna has made it win number seven for the season with a brilliant victory at the Dungarvan CC-promoted CycleSports GP this afternoon.

The Aquablue man, who will spearhead the Irish U23 development team at the Kerry Group Rás Mumhan next weekend, had too much in the tank for a gallant Stephen Murray (Strata3-VeloRevolution) at the end of the 107-kilometre event.

Both riders had been in the break from the opening lap after Murray attacked as soon as the flag dropped.

He was joined by his teammate David Coughlan before McKenna went across to them. They were joined by Giant Cork man Ryan O’Donovan and eventual third-place Martin Mizgajski (Rossbury Racing).

O’Donovan suffered cruel luck when he punctured and never got back on terms, while Coughlan did not manage to last the pace and was distanced on a climb on the second lap.

There were three laps in total and those in the break never relented, even when a strong chase group from behind closed in.

Hunting down the escape were McKenna’s teammate Colm Cassidy as well as local man Robin Kelly (Waterford Racing team) but they never managed to bridge.

Heading up for the finish, McKenna tried to shake Murray several times but the former Dungarvan CC man was equal to his accelerations.

However, McKenna has proven himself a powerful operator this year with more wins than most will get in their careers and he launched his race-winning attack with one kilometre to go, pulling clear of Murray.

We'll have more later.
