Primož Roglič (Slovenia) has blow away his rivals in the men’s Olympic Games TT in Tokyo today, taking the gold medal by over one minute when his closest rivals were covered by just seconds.
Nicolas Roche was Ireland’s sole representative in today’s
today, starting and finishing in Fuji International Speedway,
and he placed 28th, some 6:19 down on what was a very hard course.
New champion Roglič appeared to ride well within himself
on the first lap of two in the 44.2km test but when he went out onto the second
lap he hit the afterburners and put a minute or more in the other top riders.
Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands, who has come back to the
sport after a career breakaway earlier this year, has taken the silver medal
some 1:01 off the winner.
Rohan Dennis of Australia, who made the Olympic TT his
big focus for the year, had to be content with bronze today; some 1:04 off the
pace of Roglič.
Dennis finished on the same official time as Stefan Küng
(Switzerland) but just nudged him out by a fraction of a second for the bronze
medal.
World champion Filippo Ganna (Italy) had to settle for 5th
place today some 1:05 down while Wout van Aert (Belgium) was back in 6th at
1:40.
More to come.
