Primož Roglič's decision to take an aggressive approach to the finale of today's stage 10 at La Vuelta backfired spectacularly when he crashed while descending on his own.

The Jumbo-Visma rider was in the race leader's jersey starting out this morning after yesterday's rest day and decided to attack the other favourites on the final climb, Puerto de Almáchar. While he distanced all of his rivals and was flying down the climb solo, gaining time on the other big names, he then crashed hard.

He appeared to overcook a sweeping right hander while descending and came down very hard. Luckily there was a large section of road and gravel to his left, which he slid across, coming to a stop before hitting the guard rail.

He was immediately back up on his bike and got going again just ahead of a small group containing Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Miguel Angel Lopez, Enric Mas (both Movistar) and Roglič's team mate Sepp Kuss.

In the end, that group caught Roglič and they finished together, having swelled to seven by the finish as others also caught them. They sprinted it out for just 32nd place on the stage as so many riders were already up the road at the time.

The stage win went to Michael Storer of Team DSM, after he attacked the breakaway on the final climb. He powered into the finish in Rincón de la Victoria, after 189km of racing, to take his second stage win of this Vuelta.

He was 22 seconds up on a four-man chasing group, which was led in by Mauri Vansevenant (Deceuninck-QuickStep) from Clément Champoussin (AG2R Citroën).

Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) was in that group sprinting for 2nd place today, and finished in 5th place on the stage. However, he took the leader's jersey as he was over 11 minutes up on Roglic on the finish line. Eiking now leads overall by 58 seconds from Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), with Roglic now in 3rd at 2:17.
