Pidcock Worlds Xeno Young

Ben Walsh and Xeno Young have been in action in the junior TT at the World Championships in Bergen. But it was Team GB’s Tom Pidcock who showed the way, taking the gold to add to his cyclocross world title.

Already the British, European and world cyclocross champion, Tom Pidcock has won gold in the junior TT at the World Championships in Bergen.

Demonstrating, once again, that he can turn his hand to any discipline and beat all comers Pidcock took the title today by 12 seconds from Italian Antonio Puppio.

On the 21.1km undulating course Poland’s Filip Maciejuk finished just one second behind Puppio for bronze.

From an Irish perspective the TT was nothing to write home about as Xeno Young and Ben Walsh finished down the field.

Young was 30th at 1:34 and knows he can do better at this level on the road.

Expectations were always going to be high after winning silver in the individual pursuit at the European and world track championships this summer.

And while his 30th place today is far off his achievements on the track, he has been focussed on the boards this season. And he has sealed the deal twice for Ireland with exceptional performances.

Ben Walsh went into today’s test having retained his Irish junior TT title just over a week ago.

He has been the dominant junior at home this year, winning the opening stage of the Junior Tour of Ireland and holding the yellow jersey all the way.

His 45th place today, some 1:56 off the flying Pidcock, was disappointing.

But he will bank invaluable experience from these Worlds that he will use to his benefit in the U23 ranks next year.

More to follow.
