Philip Lavery previously signing autographs on Team Ireland duty; he had a good day in France today
Philip Lavery has begun to make his presence felt in the French peloton after leaving last month to join his new club there, AC Besanconi.
The 22-year-old Dubliner took a very strong top ten result today in the 158km Troyes-Dijon, an Elite National-ranked race.
He was by all accounts one of the main animators of the race; riding from the front for long periods and forcing the selection on a number of occasions.
It was an attack by Lavery that effectively began the key split of the day. He went up the road alone and was soon joined by three others. They worked well together and pulled out a good gap on the bunch before being joined by a number of groups of riders who sensed the race-winning move was forming.

In the end, the attentiveness of many of the leading teams saw that lead group swell to an unmanageable 30 riders.

With around 25 miles of the near 100 mile race remaining, Lavery decided to try and split the large group and succeeded in doing so. The pressure he applied saw nine riders form at the front around 10 miles after the Irishman attacked. The French Army team was well represented in that selection and it was to dominate the finale when four of its members pressed ahead off the front of the nine-man escape.
That quartet was to arrive at the finish in tact to fill the first four places on the day, a full minute ahead of the next rider home. The remains of the breakaway fragmented when the military men made their move. Lavery ended the day in 9th place, some 4:26 down on the winner but is clearly settling well into his surroundings.
His plans for the remainder of the season are unclear though he is scheduled to ride the P&O Ferries Tour of the North over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend.
A former overall winner of the race and multi stage winner, he is due to ride later this month with the Ulster team having ridden for the province a number of times in the past, most notably taking a team track pursuit bronze medal with Ulster at the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
