National U23 champion, Philip Lavery has put in another very good ride with his new team in France, taking second today in the Annemasse-Bellegarde national elite race from a field of 150 riders.

The Dubliner, who is due home next weekend to ride the P&O Ferries Tour of the North on the Ulster team, was part of a three-man chase group today that hunted down long-time lone leader Frédéric Brun (Bourg-en-Bresse Ain Cycling).

Lavery put in a late surge at the end of the 177km race in a bid to win, but it wasn’t enough to close down the leader and he had to be content with second place.

The race is run on a testing course with a number of tough climbs and Lavery’s result indicates he is in some very good early season form. It was his third top ten of the season since travelling to France last month.

A former winner of the P&O Ferries Tour of the North, he will be looking to repeat his overall win of 2010 next weekend or at the very least to take a stage victory from the race.
