Philip Lavery loses yellow jersey in Tour de Franche-Comté, abandons final stage

Philip Lavery may have lost his yellow jersey, but he had an excellent ride on the first three of five stages in France

Philip Lavery’s ride in the four-day, five-stage, Tour de Franche-Comté in eastern France has turned into something of a game of two halves for the talented 22-year-old from Dublin.

He won the opening stage last Thursday to take the yellow jersey and was then fourth in the sprint to the line that settled Friday’s second stage.

That result meant he maintained the overall lead as he faced into the first of two road stages yesterday, Saturday.

On the first of those, which was 92km in length, Lavery was again right in the mix, defending his yellow jersey with 7th place on the stage, which was won by Briton Adam Yates.

Going into yesterday’s afternoon stage it was looking good for Lavery as he and his team were holding up well under the challenge of a quality field.

However, in that afternoon stage the Irishman lost 16 minutes, though the reason for that massive loss is not entirely clear. That result obviously saw him lose his yellow jersey for today’s final 180km stage, which he abandoned.

While the last couple of stages and the loss of his jersey will be a disappointment for him, his ride in the race over the first three stages was extremely impressive.

The race is a major one in France and attracts a lot of strong teams from across the country. It means his prospects of securing a contract for next year will have been aided greatly by his results on what was a big stage.
