Philip Lavery on the podium in the yellow jersey at the four-day, five-stage, Tour de Franche-Comté in eastern France
Philip Lavery has put in another very strong showing on the second stage of the Tour de Franche-Comté, coming home in fourth place in the bunch sprint at the end of 196.3km today, Friday.
That ride was good enough to see the Dubliner maintain the yellow jersey he secured in the five-stage event after winning yesterday’s opening stage.
On that occasion he escaped in a seven-man move during the 162.5km stage from Bermont to Faucogney-et-la-Mer, with Lavery and Frederik Backaert (SCF-Omega Pharma-Quick Step) just slightly distancing the other five in the sprint for the line.
Lavery got the verdict on the line to take a great win and grab the yellow jersey. Today he was fourth in the sprint to the line in a bunch containing 51 riders, around half of the field, at the end of the stage from Jussey to Champlitte. A three-rider escape was swallowed up in the last 1km.
The race in eastern France continues with a split stage tomorrow – 91.9km and 73,8km – with the final stage of 180km on Sunday.
Lavery had already taken two wins this season with his new AC Bisontine team before yesterday’s stage victory. However, the Tour de Franche-Comté is a much bigger race than those he has taken in since moving to France earlier this year, meaning his stage win yesterday or an outright victory could put him in the shop window to secure a place on a larger French team or possibly secure him a contract to bring him back into the professional ranks.
