Philip Deignan is going well in Italy and is putting together some real consistency now
As his Unitedhealthcare Irish team mate Martyn Irvine was undergoing surgery for a suspected fractured hip after a crash in the Tour of Taiwan, Philip Deignan was thankfully enjoying better fortune with a world class climbing display in Italy yesterday, Thursday.
The Donegal man made the select group on a hilly stage of the five-day Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali.
Deignan was to the fore on the third stage yesterday which saw the riders tackle 162km. The route included four laps of a finishing circuit which included the punishing 18 percent climb of La Ville Monte Tiffi.
After the early breakaway was reeled in, the closing laps whittled down the field significantly until a select group of just 18 riders remained, of which Ireland’s Deignan was one. Just before the riders faced the final passage of the climb, Deignan attacked in a four man group that included Damiano Cunego (Lampre) and Moreno Moser (Cannondale).
They were brought back and the lead group then split the final time up the climb and Diego Ulissi (Lampre) attacked to win alone. Deignan came home in 11th place with Ivan Basso (Cannondale) some 1:38 down. The Irishman is now 10th overall with three stages remaining.
The race started on Wednesday with a split stage. Deignan finished in the main bunch on the 100km opening road stage while his team lost 35 seconds in the team time trial on Wednesday afternoon.
