Philip Deignan in top 10 after Giro del Trentino opening stage

Philip Deignan is in the top 10 at the Giro del Trentino stage race in Italy with a savage stage to come in the mountains tomorrow, Wednesday. Above, Deignan and his Team Sky colleagues get their team time trial effort underway.

 

Philip Deignan is in the top 10 overall at the Giro del Trentino stage race in Italy and his Team Sky line-up finished 2nd in the opening team time trial.

The stage was won by Astana who put Valerio Agnoli in the first leader’s jersey of the event after he crossed the finish line first.

The opening test was 12.1km in length on an exposed course overlooking Lake Garda in Riva del Garda into Torbole.

Astana clocked a time of 13mins 30secs, just 14 seconds ahead of Team Sky.

As well as Donegal’s Deignan, it has in its line-up Christian Knees, Ian Boswell, David Lopez, Alex Peters, Xabier Zandio and new boy Gianni Moscon.

Ag2r La Mondiale came home in 3rd place on the same time as Team Sky, with last year’s stage winners Bora Argon 4th a further two seconds back.

However, its sprinter Sam Bennett is not riding this event.

The result gives Astana’s Vincenzo Nibali a head start over Team Sky’s Landa, who Deignan will likely be pulling for for the next three days.

The first road stage tomorrow, Wednesday, takes the riders 220km from Lienz to Arco-Anras with two cat 2 climbs before the final ascent; the cat 1 to Anras over the border in Austria.
