Philip Deignan (Unitedhealthcare) has held onto 11th place on the final general classification of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali (2.1) after the last stage yesterday.

Freezing and wet conditions in Italy saw the final stage shortened by around 20km. The race organisers also took the unusual move of taking the stage time for the final general classification at a point on the route when the bunch was 3:40 behind the day’s breakaway.

It meant while Deignan was in a group that lost 9:41 by the finish, he retained the 11th place he had held going into the final stage, having climbed very well on the harder stages last week. Yesterday’s stage was won by Damiano Caruso (Cannondale) while Diego Ulissi (Lampre) won the race outright.
