Philip Deignan is going well in Italy, climbing strongly and consistently this season

Philip Deignan has put in another very strong climbing display on stage three of the five-day Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali in Italy.

The Unitedhealthcare rider was among the select group on the final climb of the day until he was slightly distanced with others by a lead group of 11 riders that reached the finish together despite the final climb and late attacking somewhat splitting the best climbers in the race.

The stage was won by former Giro winner  Damiano Cunego (Lampre), with the first 11 finishing on the same time. Deignan was in 22nd place, some 41 seconds down. He is now in 12th place overall, some 2:53 down on Cunego’s team mate Diego Ulissi.

The race continues tomorrow with a 14.4km TT – the second race against the clock since the opening stage on Wednesday. The proceedings conclude on Sunday with a 141km road stage.

Deignan was 11th on yesterday’s stage which featured a tough climb on the finishing circuit, completed four times by the riders. He made it into the select group of climbers and even went on the attack late in the day.

That ride and his performance today, coupled with some very strong climbing on the Tour de San Luis in Argentina in January, signals a return to form and consistency that last year eluded the popular Donegal man and former Vuelta stage winner.
