Paul Forristal wins Gorey Three Day stage 3
Having built a reputation as a very strong man against the watch, Paul Forristal has now earned his road race spurs with a coveted win at the Gorey Three Day.
The Orwell Wheeler had won the TT at Rás Mhaigh Eo last weekend. And having that stage race in the west of Ireland in his legs has clearly added to his form.
He would have been expected to ride a bit better than he did in this morning’s TT in Gorey; placing 12th some 32 seconds down.
But in the afternoon road stage he came good. Forristal was part of a breakaway of strong riders that gained time on the rest of the race.
And when he came to the finish line with just three others, he demolished the sprint for a great victory.
He finished just ahead of former national masters road race champion Keith Gater (Waterford Racing).
And rounding out the podium was Declan Maloney of Sports Room Racing. Completing the top four was Ben Barlow of Spokes Racing team.
Barlow is enjoying a strong weekend, finishing 2nd and 3rd on the opening stage and in today’s TT respectively to team mate and race leader Dylan Hughes.
This afternoon Hughes finished in 5th place, just 15 seconds behind the leading four. And that means he comfortably keeps his yellow jersey going into the final stage.
With four laps of a 24.1km circuit based around Gorey to ride, the escape went cleat towards the end of the second lap.
The two leading men overall, Hughes and Barlow, were present.
Also there was eventual stage winner Forristal, along with Gater, Maloney and Daniel Graham (Mellow Velo), among others.
However, as the finish approached and the attacks began the front group was reduced to just four.
