Orwell Two Day: The breakaway split just before the line, with Liam Curley and Cian Keogh edging ahead to fight it out for victory on the day. However, yellow jersey Paul Forristal wasn't too far away (Photo: Sean Rowe)
Liam Curley has edged out Cian Keogh for victory on the
final stage of the Orwell Two Day, though there was no dislodging Paul
Forristal from the yellow jersey.
Paul Kennedy (Foran CC) had won the morning stage 1 TT on
Saturday and then defended his yellow jersey in the afternoon road stage, won
by Forristal.
However, sadly Kennedy suffered a family bereavement and
had to leave the race after the split stage on Saturday.
That sad news for Kennedy had an impact on the race,
meaning Forristal (Scott Orwell) assumed the yellow jersey for the final stage
today; a 108km road race.
And while there was aggression through that final leg
today, Forristal hung onto the overall lead.
It meant he ran out the overall winner of the event for the promoting club for the second year running.
When the breakaway went clear today on the final stage it
was a very strong one, featuring Curley (Strata 3-VeloRevolution), Keogh (Ciclotel
Travel YPB) and Forristal.
Also present was Kevin McCambridge, the Vitus-Chill-NRPT
teenager who finished 2nd in the opening test to Kennedy.
Another top junior, Tom Moriarty of O’Leary Stone
Kanturk, was also in the escape group as was Darragh McCarter of Donegal Bay
CC.
Moriarty targeted the climbers’ jersey today and he did
enough out on the road to win that competition.
However, he paid the price for taking the maximum points
on the last couple of laps, losing contact with the escape last time up the
climb.
That left the others to fight it out for stage honours,
with Curley and Keogh getting ahead of the others and taking 1st and 2nd.
McCarter then came through just a couple of seconds
behind for 3rd place, from McCambridge and Forristal.
That saw Forristal win the race overall as well as the
points classification. McCambridge took the junior rider classification.
Moriarty went home with the polka dot jersey. In the end
Forristal won the overall title for another year from McCambridge and Curley.
