Orwell Two Day | All change at top as 100km+ breakaway men dominate

Jason Kenny (UCD Cycling Club) has claimed overall victory in the men's Orwell Two Day after escaping in a three-man breakaway group that gained time on today's final stage and re-ordered the top of the general classification.

Conor Hennebry (Dan Morrissey Pactimo) claimed stage victory but as Kenny was best-placed overall of the breakaway men today - and by a significant margin - he ran out of the overall win.

That winning group today was a really strong one; Hennebry, Kenny and Mark Shannon of Burren Cycling Club powering clear just 15km into the 122km stage and gaining over six minutes at one stage in wet and cold conditions.

Hennebry won the stage from Shannon, with Kenny 3rd just four seconds back and having ridden for time in the knowledge the overall victory was on the line.

Those three were over four minutes clear of the next group on the road, meaning they also took the top three positions in the final general classification. The yellow jersey going into today's final stage, Paul Kennedy (Burren CC), was among the long list of non-finishers. He crashed on yesterday's stage and while he recovered and lost no time he brought injuries into today's race.

Kenny started today's stage, in the rain in Co Wicklow, in 9th place overall at 1:36. He had lost all of that time to race leader Kennedy on the opening stage TT yesterday morning. In yesterday afternoon's kermesse stage, Kenny was among the 16-rider group that gained time on the rest of the field.

Hennebry was also in that front group yesterday afternoon but he had lost 2:43 to Kennedy on the stage 1 TT. And while Shannon put in a very good ride in the TT - placing 7th at 1:22 - he missed the move yesterday. It meant they started today's stage in 20th and 21st overall; Hennebry 2:43 down and Shannon at 2:50.

In the women's race, Jennifer Neenan (Sundrive Track Team) took her third stage victory from three today, with junior rider Katie Reilly (Orwell Wheelers) 2nd and Autumn Collins (AWOL O'Shea) in 3rd. Neenan won the overall on 31 points with Collins and Reilly 2nd and 3rd, both on 17 points.
