O’Reilly and Egan win out in three stages in one day race

Cian O'Reilly is well known in the sport of duathlon and he proved himself to be a very useful bike rider at the weekend when he won the Clonmel CC-promoted one-day stage race by a margin of 19 seconds (Photo: Sean Rowe)

UCD-Fitzcycles.ie had a great Rás with Eoin Morton bagging a stage win while Ian Richardson claimed the best county rider prize.

And the club appear to have another man on the rise, with Cian O'Reilly winning the inaugural Clonmel GP, a race that well-known Irish cycling man Declan Byrne came up with earlier this year.

Over three hard stages the riders contested a 1.2km hill-climb, a 26km summit finish road stage and a 50km criterium, with O'Reilly shading it from Thomas O'Brien (Sundrive Track Team) and Eamonn Staunton (Westport Covey Wheelers).

O'Reilly is having a great year so far and having started as an A4 he was quickly upgraded to A3 after successive wins in the Cycleways Cup and the Stamullen GP.

He laid the foundations for victory at the weekend by winning the hill-climb and he defended the jersey through the remaining two stages.

Bray Wheelers had reason to celebrate in the A4 race as Pearse Egan took home the yellow jersey, though he was pushed all the way by Damien Donlon (McNally Swords)  and David O'Mahony(Blarney CC).

They were seven and 11 seconds back, respectively.
