O'Mahony has too much for form rider Maguire in Rás Ceatharlach

Darragh O'Mahony has taken another victory on the home scene after finishing solo in the main event at Rás Ceatharlach today.

The Swift Carbon rider proved strongest from a large breakaway in Co Carlow after getting away from that leading group late in the contest with Andy Maguire (Spellman Dublin Port).

And while Maguire has been on a great run of form of late after being crowned national criterium champion and winning last weekend's Leinster road race championships, O'Mahony had the measure of him today.

The eventual winner took advantage of a drag nearing the finish to distance Maguire, with those two finishing on their own in 1st and 2nd places respectively.

They were followed by the remainder of the large breakaway which hotly contested the minor placings in the Carlow Road Cycling Club promotion.

From that group that trailed O'Mahony and Maguire, Stephen Gillman proved strongest; the O’Leary Stone Kanturk rider rounding out the podium on the day by winning the sprint.

Darragh McCarter of Spellman Dublin Port was next, in 4th place, with Richard Meaney (Westport Covey) in 5th and Tom Regan (Echelon CC) completing the top six in the main event.

While the headline race, for all categories apart from A4s, was handicapped - with two groups going off two minutes apart - it was back together after the first lap of four.

In the A4 race Andy Grehan of Lucan CRC claimed the victory from Colin Clavin (Streamstown Cycling Club) and Joe Burke (Naas Cycling Club).
