Michael O’Loughlin has survived the fourth and final stage of the Gorey Three Day to take home the final yellow jersey of the race.

The teenager from Carrick, who rides for Magnet.ie-NRPT but was representing Ireland this weekend, finished in the main bunch meaning he retained the overall lead he took in Sunday morning’s time trial.

French rider Pierre Henri Jung took the final stage from Gorey to Blessington in a bunch sprint, just as he had done in Gorey on Sunday afternoon’s stage.

Those two victories and his 3rd place on Saturday’s opener were enough to give him victory in the points classification.

Darragh O’Mahoney, the O’Leary Stone Kanturk man riding for Munster this weekend, wrapped up the climbers’ classification when he also finished safely in today’s bunch.

He had that competition won before the stage started so simply needed to finish the stage to take the polka dot jersey home with him.

O’Mahoney and O’Loughlin escaped in the winning breakaway on Saturday’s opener and late in the day they pulled clear of the breakaway men to contest the stage in a two-up sprint won by O’Mahoney.

Crucially, they gained just over one minute on the others in the escape and almost 1:40 on the bunch, setting them up very nicely for the weekend.

In the short morning time trial on Sunday, the fancied O’Loughlin simply had too much firepower for everybody else.

He won the stage and took the yellow jersey. And with yesterday’s road stage and today’s final leg both ending in bunch sprints, there was no change at the top of the leader board after the time trial.

O’Mahoney was 2nd overall, some 21 seconds behind O’Loughlin. And the outright victor’s two Team Ireland team mates, Adam Stenson and Jake Gray, were 3rd and 4th overall.

We’ll have more later.
