Oisin Ferrity with the gold medal after the junior road race at the Junior Commonwealth Games

Last year's Irish junior road race champion, Oisin Ferrity (Caldwell Cycles), has won the gold medal in the road race at the Junior Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago today.

The 17-year-old was best in the 65km race, starting and finishing in Couva in west-central Trinidad, after arriving at the finish in a two-sprint just 20 seconds up on the bronze medal winner and 50-seconds clear of a 20-rider chasing group.

Ferrity and Max Bufton (Wales) battled it out in the sprint to decide the gold and silver medal, with the Northern Irish rider coming out on top, adding the Commonwealth title to the Irish road race crown he took last year.

Ferrity also claimed two stage wins, and the points classification, at the Junior Tour of Ireland last month. Ferrity and Bufton finished on the same time today, with Newjoe Lau (Malaysia) 3rd at 20 seconds.
