O'Brien and Heverin best in close-run U16 races at Verge Cross Clonmel

Shane O'Brien (Fermoy CC) and Emer Heverin (All human/VeloRevolution Racing Team) have won the U16 races at Verge Cross Clonmel.

Both races were very closely run, with Heverin and Katie Turner (Orwell Wheelers) matching each other around the three-lap race at Powerstown Park Racecourse, Clonmel.

Though Turner was able to hold Heverin, it was the All human/VeloRevolution Racing Team who got the verdict in the final two-up sprint to the line; separated by just one second.

Orla Mulhearne (Panduit Carrick Wheelers) completed the podium on the day, with Ciara Flavin (Dungarvan CC) 4th and Abaigh Dennehy (Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club) 5th.

In the U16 boys race, a familiar name from Fermoy CC led the way; Shane O'Brien being the brother of Liam O'Brien, who excelled in the cyclocross discipline before stepping up to Lidl Trek Future Racing on the road this year.

As was the case in the girls race, the two top riders yesterday were very evenly matched, with Caleb McGreevy (VC Glendale) showing his class and pushing O'Brien all the way; only five seconds separating them on the line.

Conor Regan (Kilcullen Cycling Club Murphy Geospacial) took 3rd place while Darragh O'Keeffe (EPIC MTB Expert Cycles) was 4th, Niall McDonald (Carlow RCC) 5th and James Logue (Panduit Carrick Wheelers) 6th.

In the U14 boys race, James Cunningham (Team WORC) was a clear winner; taking victory from Rory McCool (Square Wheelers) by 1:38, with Tomás Connolly (Orwell Wheelers) 3rd just a further 14 seconds back.

The U14 girls race was won by Ava Baker (Breffni Wheelers), with who was 2:27 up on 2nd placed Laoise Crinion (IMBRC), with Ciara O'Connor (Drogheda Wheelers) 3rd.
