Nolan, Young, O'Leary victorious in tough conditions at Leinster CX Series

Sean Nolan (EvoPro Racing) and Grace Young (All human-VeloRevolution) won the men's and women's main events at 'Round 2' of the Leinster Cyclocross Series in Glencullen in muddy conditions on Sunday.

Pierce O'Leary (IMBRC) prevailed in the men's B race after a nail-biting finish with Adrian Carroll (Tullamore CTC). The women's race also saw a close contest for the much of the event, with Joanne Grogan of American tam BMB Racing pushing Young hard and leading the race in the latter stages.

In the end, after Grogan had nightmare penultimate lap having just taken the lead, Young put in a brilliant lap and went ahead. Young then pressed on during the final lap of five and emerged with another win, from Grogan, by 27 seconds. Stephanie Roche (Scott Bright Motor Group) rounded out the podium, some 47 seconds down on winner Young.

The men's main event saw Nolan, the winner two weeks ago in Oldcastle, gain a clear lead on the first of seven laps. He led eventual runner-up Ronan O'Flynn, of host club Orwell Wheelers, by 18 seconds.

Eventual 3rd place finished Richard Maes (All human-VeloRevolution) lost 22 seconds to Nolan on that opening lap. Fran McDermott of Oldcastle CC was also in the mix and he went out onto the second lap in 3rd place, alongside O'Flynn.

From that point, Nolan put in a big shift out front and was by far the quickest of the field on every lap of the race. By the finish, after 48 minutes of racing, he was 2:42 up on runner-up O'Flynn, with Maes having overtaken McDermott for 3rd. Maes was 2:55 down on Nolan and McDermott just six further seconds back in 4th.

In the men's B race there was nothing to separate eventual winner and runner-up, O'Leary and Carroll, over the opening three laps of six. On the fourth lap O'Leary got ahead; putting over 10 seconds into Carroll, who then came back at him on the penultimate lap.

On the final circuit, which they rode together at the head of the race, O'Leary just got the verdict to win by a single second from Carroll. Conor Fennell (Orwell Wheelers) was 3rd at 36 seconds.
