Garmin-Sharp’s Andrew Talansky takes the stage win and race lead; Nicolas Roche’s group is just behind

Nicolas Roche (Saxo-Tinkoff) has made an important selection on the third stage of Paris-Nice today, arriving at the finish in a group of 25 riders that put one minute into the best of the rest of the field.

That select group the Irishman was in went clear in the attacking that broke out going over the last climb of the day a little more than 10 miles from the finish on the wet 170km stage.

A group of seven riders pulled clear and just about stayed away. However, during the pursuit of them down the climb and into the finish in Brioude, what was left of the peloton fractured, with Roche’s group pulling clear.

The stage was won by US rider Andrew Talansky (Gramin-Sharp) in the sprint from the lead group and he is also the new leader of the race. Roche’s group came over the line seven seconds after the breakaway, with Roche 7th in the sprint from that group to take 14th on the stage. He is now 18th overall, some 17 seconds down on Talansky ahead of tomorrow’s 200km stage.
