Niamh McKiverigan of Scott Eurocycles made the trip to Dublin worthwhile yesterday when she claimed an impressive win at the Supercross Cup.
In the second round of the competition in Tymon North, Tallaght, the young emerging rider won out after a great battle with Lisa Stapelbroek (Kenmare Cycling Club) .
There was just seven seconds in it in the end and while Stapelbroek really made the eventual winner work for it, McKiverigan had the answers to the questions put to her.
In the four-lap contest, over three quarters of an hour, it was Stapelbroek, a prolific winner on the home scene, who got the best of the early exchanges.
She pressed ahead on the opening lap and
stole nine seconds on eventual winner McKiverigan, who then pegged back a
little time on the second lap.
However, after the halfway point it was McKiverigan
who gained the upper hand; putting eight seconds into her rival on the
penultimate lap.
And with the race still very much in the
balance on the final circuit, young McKiverigan showed her class.
She went around the course in the
fastest time of the day, and some 10 seconds quicker than Stapelbroek, to win
by six seconds.
Caoimhe May (Scott Orwell) rounded out
the podium; the junior rider claiming 3rd some 1:23 behind the winner.
The victory added to a great week for McKiverigan
who was awarded Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon Council youth female athlete
of the year.
She was presented with her award by Lady
Mary Peters, whose trust McKiverigan is an ambassador for.
In the men’s main event yesterday Paul O’Reilly (Dan
Morrissey-MIG-Pactimo) made it two wins from two to extend his early lead in
the series.
He claimed victory from Robin Seymour (Team Worc) by
44 seconds with young Sean Nolan (Navan Road Club) and impressive 3rd
just four seconds off Seymour.
