Newcomer Joanna Patterson takes Irish elite women's TT title

Joanna Patterson has won the Irish elite women’s TT title in Co Wicklow. The top TT rider based in Scotland is a newcomer to the Irish scene having only relatively recently focused on cycling.

The former triathlete, from Northern Ireland, has already competed here as she won the 25 Mile Ulster TT Championships in July, riding for The Independent Pedaler. She is the current CTT – the British TT racing organisation – champion at 100 miles and 50 miles.

Today she put in a very strong ride over the 33.79km course from Brittas in Co Wickow, out the old road to Arklow and back again.

Patterson recorded a time of 47:00, which was 51 seconds faster than last year’s TT champs winner, Eve McCrystal of Bellurgan Wheelers; one of the stars of the Paralympics for Ireland with her tandem partner Katie George Dunlevy.

Linda Kelly, the Barrow Wheelers rider who made a breakthrough at Rás na mBan earlier this month, took the bronze, some 1:21 down on winner Patterson.

In the Masters women’s title race, Jane Wilkinson of Bann Wheelers took the Irish title, in a time of 37:07.

She was 13 seconds up on silver medal winner Ciaran Havern (Newry Wheelers), with Yvonne Doran (Orwell Wheelers) claiming bronze at 28 seconds.
