National Champs | Barnes hits jackpot as Murphy, McLoughlin break through

Harvey Barnes (East Tyrone Cycling Club) reigning supreme at the National Track Championships in Dublin over the weekend, winning three Irish titles, while Olympic sailing silver medal winner - and recent cycling covert - Annalise Murphy (Longcourt Hotel-NCW Wheelers) is now a double Irish champion, an incredible achievement in a new sport.

Niall McLoughlin (Westport Covey Wheelers CC), a very promising junior last year, is clearly now in good nick again after his Leaving Cert this year as he took his first elite Irish title, in the scratch race. Indeed, he got in ahead of Barnes - denying him four gold medals on the day - with Conn McDunphy (Lucan CRC) 3rd, and also winning the individual pursuit title.

There were also two golds for Orla Walsh, the Nopinz Motip Race Team rider dusting herself down from her recent omission from the Irish team for the World Championships and claiming both the sprint and keirin titles.

Walsh topped a sprint podium that also included Deirbhle Ivory and Ellen Ni Cleirigh in 2nd and 3rd, both riding for Longcourt Hotel-NCW Wheelers. And in the keirin, Walsh again beat Ivory into 2nd place, with Autumn Collins, another Longcourt Hotel-NCW Wheeler, claiming the bronze.

In the men's individual pursuit, McDunphy - who was first reserve for the Irish team for the men's road race at the Worlds in Glasgow - was best in a time of 4.48.68, beating Sean Landers of UCD Cycling Club (5.00.22) in the gold-silver ride; Landers adding his silver to the gold he won with UCD in the team pursuit a couple of weeks ago.

In the bronze-4th ride, Sean Lenehan (Spellman Dublin Port) clocked a time of 4.54.64 to hold off Jason Kenny for the bronze, after the UCD man recorded a time of 4.58.02.

In the women's individual pursuit, the gold-silver ride could barely have been much closer and was decided by just over one tenth of a second; Annalise Murphy recording a winning time of 3.55.51 to the 3.55.64 ridden by Gabriella Homer (Saint Piran WRT). Aoife O'Brien (Spellman-Dublin Port) went beat Jennifer Neenan (UCD Cycling Club) in the head-to-head for bronze; 4.06.11 Vs 4.08.84.

Barnes won the men's Keirin title from Eoin Mullen (Black Line) and Callum O'Toole (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club). And in the kilo Barnes was on the mark again - by a big margin - to win gold in 1.08.57, from Cian Keogh of Skyline Racing (1.12.59) and O'Toole (1.12.59).

And making it an impressive haul of three national title wins at the weekend meeting on Sundrive Road, Barnes also won the sprint from Mullen Black Line and Alexander Abdul-Wahab (Spellman Dublin Port Track Team).

In the women's scratch race, Gabriella Homer (Saint Piran WRT) claimed gold from Aoife O'Brien (Spellman-Dublin Port) and Annalise Murphy (Longcourt Hotel - NCW Wheelers).

Adding to her individual pursuit gold, Annalise Murphy joined with Longcourt Hotel-NCW Wheelers team mate Ellen Ni Cleirigh to win the Madison from UCD CC's Clodagh Ní Ghallchóir and Jennifer Neenan. Helen McParland and Jennifer Bates made it a 1-3 for Longcourt Hotel-NCW Wheelers.

In the men's Madison, Christopher Donald and Stefan Caulfield-Dreier (Spellman-Dublin Port) won gold from Jason Kenny and Sean Landers (UCD Cycling Club), with Conor Murnane and Michael Browne (UCD Cycling Club) winning bronze.
