Killeen hunts down Smith to take another win at Mount Nugent GP

One of the most consistent riders on the domestic scene,
Ronan Killeen opened his 2019 account in Robinstown last month and has taken
another win this evening in Mount Nugent.

The Lucan CRC man was far too strong for the opposition
in what was a very aggressive Mount Nugent Grand Prix in Co Cavan.

He forged clear in a strong man’s breakaway after the groups
came together in the handicapped race promoted by Navan Road Club.

And while Mark Smith (Ciclotel Travel fueled by YPB), a junior rider, made a brave bid for victory late on, Killeen closed him down and powered around him for victory.

Teenager Smith hung on for 2nd place with the winner’s Lucan CRC team mate Eugene Murtagh coming through for 3rd place.

The fight for victory played about among the breakaway
men as what remained of the bunch was breathing down their necks all the way to
the finish line.

With 11 laps of a technical circuit to be raced this
evening, the handicaps were wiped out and the groups together long before the
halfway point.

Constant attacking was the order of the day once the race
merged, with the bunch getting smaller each lap amid intense racing.

However, while the attacking was repeatedly neutralised,
a decisive gap emerged with about two laps to go.

A breakaway forged clear containing Killeen, Smith and
Murtagh along with James McGreevy (Westport Covey
Wheelers) and recent Danny Boy Races winner Des Woods of Newry Wheelers.

They pulled out a modest gap
that was to prove the winning of the race, though the remains of the bunch was
never too far back.

While Smith went for a strong
flier from the breakaway about 1km out, Killeen responded and had too much for
him; sweeping by him for victory.
