Murray just holds off Shields for Challenge Perpetual Cup victory

John Murray of Navan Road Club just holds off Mark Shields of Clonard Road Club, with Sean Lenehan in between them in this shot in 3rd place

John Murray has just held off Mark Shields for victory in the A3 Perpetual Cup today, promoted by Challenge Cycling Club in Craughwell, Co Galway.

Murray of Navan Road Club punched the air as he neared the finish line in the bunch sprint and while he did indeed cross the line first to win, Shields (Clonard RC) very nearly mugged him on the line after the early celebration.

There wasn't much to separate the top three in the bunch sprint that settled the honours, with another Navan Road Club man, Sean Lehehan, taking 3rd place just behind the winner and runner-up.

The race came down to a bunch sprint after several breakaways went up he road but were caught; the last of them recaptured with just 5km to go.

And though David Gordon and Kevin Molyneaux of host club Challenge CC put in final late digs after the last breakaway group was caught, they too were reeled in just before the sprint opened.

After the top three today Daniel Yon Hin (Spellman-Dublin Port) was 4th with Declan Gallagher (Westport Covey Wheelers CC) in 5th. John O'Halloran (Western Lakes CC) claimed 6th place from Robert Coakley (Westport Covey Wheelers CC) in 7th and David Gordon (Challenge CC) in 8th place.
