Murnane takes stage victory in Limerick as McGlinchey settles into yellow

Conor Murnane of UCD Cycling Club has won stage 2 of the A1-A2 Newcastle West Stage Race in Co Limerick after the aggression through the race today failed to result in a winning breakaway.

Murnane (23), who has been enjoying a strong run of late, won the bunch sprint that settled the honours after 156km of racing. He got the verdict just ahead of Aaron Ward (U23 National Development Team) and Shay Donley (Dan Morrissey-McCarthy Insurance Group-Pactimo).

Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster) has retained the yellow jersey he took with his victory in the opening stage prologue TT on Friday ahead of tomorrow's final stage.

The race leader and his team faced a stern test today over the 156km stage, which took the riders on six laps of a 26km circuit, when a breakaway formed early and contained a number of danger men.

Up in that move was Luke Smith of the U23 National Development Team, who started the day 6th overall just 20 seconds off the race lead. In the breakaway with him were, amongst others, Conor Gallagher and Jason Kenny (both UCD CC), John Buller (U23 National Development Team) and Conor Hennebry (Dan Morrissey-McCarthy Insurance Group-Pactimo).

While the breakaway was clear, the attacks continued in the main field, with Cycling Ulster and All human-VeloRevolution to the fore. However, the stage came down to a sprint when the breakaway was caught on the final lap.

UCD Cycling Club combined well in the approach to the sprint, with Conor Gallagher - a former junior international who recently won the Donegal Ultra - hitting the front with Murnane on his wheel and bringing him into the last few hundred metres at the front.

Though Wade appeared to be getting the upper hand in the sprint, Murnane came back at him and prevailed in what was a tight gallop to the finish line for the stage win.

However, with Wade still 2nd overall - and having finishing 2nd now on two stages - he may have a say in the final destination of yellow tomorrow, though a very strong rider has the jersey now.
