Richard Maes leads the Munster Cyclocross League heading into round three after he finished runner-up to visiting Scottish rider Dave Duggan in Ennis.

The Burren Racing Team-promoted event attracted a large field of 110 riders across the A, B, ladies, youth and kids’ races with the Aberdeen CX rider taking the spoils in the main event.

The course was tight and technical with some steep drops and Maes kept Duggan honest throughout with his superior handling skills, though Duggan just about had the measure of the Killarney CC man.

Third place on the day went to Matt Slattery of Strata3/VeloRevolution, last year’s winner in Ennis.

Former national road race champion Fiona Meade made the trip to Clare for the event and she came away with the lady’s prize while Colin O’Donoghue of Killarney CC was victorious in the B race.

Mallow is the venue for the next round of the league on October 30th where another large crowd is expected.
