Eoin Mullen has put in a very good performance at the UCI World Cup in Glasgow today, Sunday; equalling his personal best in the qualifying rounds of the men’s sprint.

The 19-year-old was a very strong 15th of the 45-man field in that qualifying round, in a PB-equalling time of 10.446.

The qualifying round for the sprint is a flying start 200 metre TT/sprint. Those finishing at the top of the field go on to ride in the sprint competition proper, which is a series of two-up sprints in a knock out format.

Mullen’s qualifying round performance was enough to get him through to the competition proper, though he was unfortunate to come up against German rider Stefan Boetticher. He was second fastest in qualifying and would go on to win the competition today; beating Mullen in their head-to-head on the way to World Cup gold.

While defeat in one ride against Boetticher would normally have ended Mullen’s competition, he was given the opportunity to go on to a B quarterfinals. He was beaten in that by Philip Hindes, a member of Team GB’s gold medal winning team sprint line up at the London Olympics.

Mullen was eventually ranked 15th in the competition today, a really strong result for a 19-year-old still only starting to cut his teeth at this level.
