Hugh Mulhearne (Iverk Produce-Carrick Wheelers) and Sarah Piner (Black Rose Racing) have won the men’s and women’s National Omnium Championships after two days of hard racing at the weekend on the Sundrive Road Vélodrome in Dublin.
In the field of 18 in the men’s omnium, Jason Howick (Bray Wheelers) got off to a good start, setting the best time in the flying 250m. However it was in the points race that the eventual medallists Hugh Mulhearne (Iverk Carrick) and John Lynch (Kilcullen) started to show what they were made of. Mulhearne took the win followed by Lynch.
The elimination race was also won by Mulhearne ahead of Lynch, with Brendan Whelan (Cycling Pursuits) taking third. Mulhearne had the overall lead by one single point after Saturday’s three events and going into day two.

A team pursuit gold medallist from last year, John Lynch set the best time in the individual pursuit ahead of Mulhearne and local rider Sean Curtis (Sundrive) early on Sunday. Those results left a very close contest at the top, with Lynch and Mulhearne sharing the overall lead heading into the last two events.
Philip Bremner (Lakeland) then won the scratch race, lifting him up to a potential podium spot. In the same race Mulhearne leapfrogged Lynch, placing him a single point ahead of Lynch with just one event of the six remaining.
Mulhearne then set the best time in the 1km TT to win the Omnium crown with Lynch unable to close the points gap, just one second slower in the final event. It meant Lynch had to settle for silver behind the new champion Mulhearne, with Bremner taking the bronze.
In the women’s event, Sarah Piner got off to a good start by winning the opening flying 250m event on Saturday. Piner kept her lead by finishing second to Roisín Kennedy (ESB) in the points race, in which Kennedy lapped the field. The latter then went on to win the elimination race giving her the outright lead overnight going into the second day of competition on Sunday.
Sunday’s events opened with Piner reducing her deficit by setting the best time in the 3km individual pursuit. Kennedy retained her overall lead with second place in the pursuit, with Susie Mitchell (Sundrive) taking third. Mitchell then went on to win the 10km scratch race with a solo move on the last lap.
Kennedy was leading the Omnium at the start of the last event; the 500m Time-Trial. That was won by Ailbhe Ivory with a time of 41.77sec, ahead of Piner and Mitchell.
That second place in the 500m TT was enough to see Piner take the 2012 title with Kennedy in second and Mitchell taking the bronze
