Today’s breakaway presses on towards the finish in Kenmare at An Post Rás na mBan
The European riders have continued to flex their considerable muscle at the An Post Rás na mBan, with Holland’s Femke Van Kessel taking stage 3 into Kenmare today following her opening day win, and Danish teenager Kamilla Sofie Vallin taking the leader’s pink jersey.
After a tough 80km stage that started and finished in Kenmare today, a group of 12 riders pulled cleared and gained more than four minutes.
That gap means barring major incident the list of potential winners in this year’s race is now well and truly whittled down with three days still remaining.
Melbourne-based Derry woman Clare Dallat, who had won yesterday afternoon’s 3.4km TT and taken the leader’s jersey with it, was dropped on the climbs today on a stage where a combination of wet weather and the heavy and hilly Kerry roads meant there was simply nowhere to hide.

The stage featured Knockanoughanish, Healy Pass and Caha Pass.
Dubliner Siobhan McNamara (Look Mum No Hands) took over the lead of the IVCA Queen of the Mountains competition thanks to an aggressive display that helped her to a single point advantage over Amalie Dideriksen of Denmark.
McNamara was clearly intent on targeting the climbing points and was led up the Caha Pass by team mate Helen McKay, with the pace up the ascent seeing a number of riders get into difficulty and being spat out the back.
McNamara took the prime at the top of that climb and then on the climb of Healy Pass it was Lowri Bunn of Abergavenny RC who took maximum points when she and McNamara distanced the others.
That duo pressed on down off the climb and were later caught by a select group behind as the race headed on for the final climb of the day. By that point the GC leader Dallat had missed the move and would lose the pink jersey.
There were three riders from the Irish team – Lydia Boylan, Anne Dalton and Lauren Creamer – in the lead group and they were predictably keen to drive it on to bolster their GC positions.
While Dalton and Creamer worked hard to set up sprinter Boylan for the gallop at the finish, it was Van Kessel who once again blasted in for the win.
While 19-year-old Vallin could only manage 8th and Boylan 10th on the stage, that was enough to move them into first and second overall with the Danish rider leading by just six seconds from the multiple Irish track champion.

Louise Moriarty (Look Mum No Hands) has won this race twice before and she was second today. She is now fifth overall and is just 15 seconds off the new race leader Vallin.
Of the other Irish in today’s lead group, Creamer is 6th on the same time as Moriarty, Dalton is 9th at 26 seconds, McNamara is 10th at 29 seconds and Fiona Meade (Cycling Munster) is 12th at 45 seconds.
With just those 45 seconds covering the top 12 and with all of those lead group riders looking strong today, any has a chance of overall glory.
A number of riders fell just after the start today including Fiona Guihen of the Ireland team who was forced to retire. Elinor Winter of Abergavenny Road Club also failed to finish after crashing.
The field appears at this stage to be more evenly matched than during some previous editions of the race, with the riders set to take in 78km on tomorrow’s Fixx Coffeehouse Valentia Island stage.
