Marcin Mizgajski (Spin
the Bean Powered by Coffee) has won the main event at the men’s Masters and ‘A3’
category National Road Race Championships in Co Limerick today.
The triathlete and cyclist topped a quality podium in the Masters 40 race, with Michael Storan (West Clare Cycling Club) taking the silver medal and rowing Olympian turned cyclist Cathal Moynihan (Tralee Manor West BC) taking the bronze.
The Masters 40 race saw the riders tackle 10 laps of the 12km circuit in Knockaderry, with two climbs each lap including the drag through the finish. And while no decisive breakaway managed to get clear in the early laps, the pace and the temperatures on the day saw the peloton get gradually smaller on each circuit.
Eventual winner Mizgajski
tried to stay attentive and not miss out on any dangerous looking moves. His Spin
the Bean Powered by Coffee team mate Alan Mackey also got involved in some of
the moves off the front which meant Mizgajski could watch on during periods of
the race and keep his powder dry.
It wasn’t until the
early stages of the final lap that an important move went clear, featuring six
riders. Mizgajski was there along with another one of the real danger
men for the day; Ronan Killeen of Lucan CRC.
However, the cooperation in the group was
not what it might have been and with only three of the riders working, the
bunch were breathing down their necks and the escapees chances did not look good.
With about 3km to go, Mizgajski decided to gamble on a solo attack rather than wait for the inevitable catch and then likely miss out in the group sprint. He managed to break free from the rest of the breakaway, who were soon caught by the bunch, and had the legs to make it all the way and take the national title.
In the ‘A3’ title
race Trevor Conway (Waterford Racing Club)
took gold from Indrek Mannik (Blarney Cycling Club), with Gordon Booth (Kilcullen
Cycling Club Murphy Geospacial) claiming the bronze.
The Masters 50 title went to Vincent Gleeson (Greemount CA) ahead of Tiit Tuluma (St Tiernan’s CC) and Martin Colgan (Armagh Down CC).
In the Masters 60 title race Joseph Murphy (Dublin Wheelers) claimed victory from Billy Crowley (Clonakilty Cycling Club) and Michael Haynes (Lucan Cycling Road Club).
