Mike Storan has taken his first win of the new season, coming home at the head of the field in the inaugural Fitscience GP in Ballina, Co Mayo.
Riding for the promoting club, Storan was one of six men to make their way into the key escape on a day when the breeze, cold and freezing rain made for some savage racing.
That breakaway moved clear around 40km into the 120km race, with the eventual winner’s team mates Jason Prendergast and Cale Coen present, along with David Nugent (Seven Springs), Chris Troy (Castlebar CC) and Eoghan Clifford (Galway Bay CC).
In the last 25km it was Nugent and Storan who proved strongest from the breakaway.
They broke clear of the others and powered their way, sharing the workload, to the finish.
They went on to contest victory in a two-up sprint at the finish which was comfortably won by Storan.
Galway Bay CC’s Derek Joyce staged a late rally from a chasing group to come through for 3rd on the day.
More later.
