Video: Impey takes Dauphiné lead as Kwiatkowski crashes

Dan Martin and his UAE Team Emirates team mates keep an eye on Team Sky as it hunts down the early breakaway on stage 2 of Critérium du Dauphiné.

Michel Kwiatkowski Team Sky crashes at Dauphiné

Daryl Impey has seized the yellow jersey at Critérium du Dauphiné after race leader Michel Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) crashed.

The stage went to  Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe). He won from Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data).

Kwiatkowski, who won Sunday’s prologue TT, went into today’s stage – some 180.5km from Montbrison to Belleville en Beaujolais – just two seconds to the good over Impey.

And when Kwiatkowski crashed at a roundabout with about 1km to go it looked like the 3km rule would save his race lead.

However, Impey had claimed yesterday’s stage with a brilliant sprint victory from a reduced peloton.

And while he could not do the same today, he did manage to take third.

The South African, who rides for Mitchelton Scott, got a time bonus for his efforts. And so he now leads the general standings by two seconds from Kwiatkowski.

Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) finished in the 80-man peloton today. He was in 44th place; safe and sound as the climbs approach.

He is now 35th overall, some 31 seconds off the race lead. Tomorrow sees the riders take on a 35km team time trial from Pont-de-Vaux to Louhans-Châteaurenaud.

It is the same length as the slight more undulating TTT in the Tour de France on stage 3. And Dan Martin will be keen to see how his team rides as a unit.

Once the team test is completed the race should really explode; four summit finishes to come before the finish on Sunday.
