Irish National Time Trial (TT) Champion Michael Hutchinson has taken the bronze medal in the British 25 mile TT Championships in Lincolnshire today, Sunday. He recorded a time of 49 minutes and 58 seconds.
He was taking part in the event because it was the title race of the RTTC, the national governing body of TTs in England and Wales. Because the race was for the association title, rather than for the national British title, it is open to all nationalities.
The first-year Irish professional Ryan Mullen of IG Sigma Sport was also riding and put in a scorching performance. The teenager was in 4th place in a quality field of top testers from across Britain and posted a time of 50:57.
The times of both Irish riders show they are in good condition less than two weeks away from the Irish TT title race in Co Louth on Thursday week.
Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) won the Irish title in Clonmel last year in his second attempt after switching from being a British registered rider to Irish. He is originally from the North. While today's time was quick, he is rarely beaten in Britain and won this title last year.
Mullen won the Irish junior title in Clonmel last year and has since progressed to the pro ranks, finding his feet in many of the tougher road races and clearly progressing at a clip in the TT, his speciality event.
However, he was one minute down on Hutchinson today, so challenging him for the national Irish title in Carlingford later this month may be beyond the David McCann-coached rider.
There will also be other quality testers in the field in Ireland including reigning road champion and former TT champion Matt Brammeier (Champion System). Philip Deignan is also back on form and has tested well in the US this year and if the Unitedhealthcare man were to ride the National TT title race he would also be a favourite.
