Mia Griffin (Roland Le Dévoluy) has taken her first World Tour podium of the year in the controversial sprint that settled the opening stage of Tour of Chongming Island (2.WWT). She looked in great form, putting in a seriously good final effort, and also secured time bonuses, with two flat stages remaining.
Griffin would have perhaps secured an even bigger result had her positioning been a little better, and her team support stronger, closer to the line. However, she overcome adversity, and moved around a little in the gallop to make space for herself after being trapped behind those ahead of her.
The final sprint into Chongming, after 108.6km of racing, was not without its controversy. Austrian Kathrin Schweinberger (Human Powered Health) crossed the line first but was relegated for what was deemed an irregular sprint. She moved to her left and squeezed Sofie van Rooijen (UAE Team ADQ).
Though the Dutch rider managed to stay upright, she wobbled for a moment, though in Schweinberger's defence, the roadside crowd control barriers changed direction a little just before the line. And that change was as much responsible for the last moment incident as any movement by the Austrian.
Schweinberger was relegated from 1st to last place in the 87-rider bunch, with Australian Georgia Baker (Liv AlUla Jayco) upgraded to stage winner, from runner-up van Rooijen and 3rd placed Griffin.
