Men's Junior Track Champs cancelled due to lack of entries; women washed out

The men's races were cancelled even before the Junior National Track Championships got underway and then rain forced the women's events to be curtailed.

Rain derailed an already depleted schedule at the Junior National Track Championships in Belfast on Saturday.

The conditions forced the organisers to postpone many events until next weekend.

Before the racing got underway the junior men's competitions were cancelled after they failed to attract the minimum level of entry.

It was a big blow to the championships and is unusual in that Cycling Ireland has put significant effort into developing the track scene of late.

Most riders have a better chance of gaining national selection to ride on the track than on the road, with the lack of interest among junior riders in the track a concern.

However, some exciting racing was still expected from the women.

But heavy rain hit, causing disruption throughout with only the 500m TT, sprint qualification, flying 200m and the first rounds of the sprint and pursuit being completed.

The pursuit and sprint will continue at the Team Track National Championships next week, as will the scratch race.
