Fran Meehan has made it a day to celebrate for defending champions in Belfast by retaining the elite women’s national cyclocross crown on the same day Roger Aiken (Banbridge CC) saw off all-comers to retain the elite men’s title.

Since winning the 2013 title race in Dundalk, Co Louth, Meehan has ventured to the Continent several times in her Irish champion’s kit to ride a number of races against the pros in Belgium.

That experience has been a baptism of fire, but has paid off in spades after she came through to win today from Mel Spath.

Today's silver medallist has won the national road title for the past two years running, and having raced with Team Tibco in the US last year she has recently joined the new Rytger Danish pro team.

However, while Meehan has not had the same amount of foreign racing as Spath over the past 12 months, that did not stop the Aquablue rider from storming to a great victory today just as she did last year.

In third place today was Maeve O’Grady, who took the first ever medal at an elite national championships for the Defence Forces team.

We have more to come from stickybottle’s Ger Cromwell in Belfast so please keep come back for full results, reports and reaction.
