“Me at World Cups is like rolling up to Tour de France on your own”

David Conroy (front) and David Montgomery put the final touches to their preparations for this weekend's UCI World Cyclocross Championships in Zolder, Belgium. It's their debuts at this level and one they're very much looking forward to.

David Montgomery says his two hopes for Sunday’s UCI World Cyclocross Championships in Belgium are for a straight forward test of ability and a race where luck doesn’t affect his result.

The Dromore man goes into the U23 race knowing what to expect after competing in a number of World Cups already.

“I have nothing but the desire to do my best,” he said. “I’m there to do my best but a bad start has you losing 40 places.”

Riding as the sole Irish competitor in the men’s U23 race, starting at 10am on Sunday, the An Post Chain Reaction man has had a long season to date, but not an unsuccessful one.

He was second to Roger Aiken (Team ASEA) in the nationals, won the U23 category for a second year running and has made steady improvement.

“I’m just hoping for a straight-forward test of ability and no bad luck," he explained.

“I was four minutes behind the winner with a dropped chain at the World Cup before Christmas.

"So to meet that with the higher competition like the World Championships – or exceed it - would leave me satisfied.

“The chain came off that time in Zolder last year," he said of December's UCI World Cup, "and I lost over a minute so that’s the thing you don’t need.

“Racing World Cups is like rolling up to the Tour de France on my own.

"You're riding around trying to get results so you need everything falling in your favour to get anything out of it.”
