Terry Mackin and Stephen McNally have taken Ireland’s first medals at the World Masters Track Championships in Manchester, scooping a bronze in the kilometre and silver in the pursuit respectively.
McNally lost out on a UCI World Title in the Manchester velodrome this evening, Monday, by less than 0.5seconds to his US rival in the final Daniel Casper.
The Orwell CC man was two seconds up after the first kilometre, but then faded badly in the second km to trail by two seconds in the 45-49 years category event. He fought hard in the third and final km to bring the deficit back to just under 0.5 secs but ultimately fell just short of gold.
He adds his Worlds masters silver to the European masters gold he took in the pursuit event in the 45-49 age category in August in Italy.
Veteran McNally also made it into the pursuit final at the National Track Championships last month only to be beaten by a flying Martyn Irvine.
Ireland’s other Worlds masters medallist from this evening in Manchester, Terry Mackin was in action in the kilo in the 35-39 year-old age group. He missed out on the silver by less than 0.5 seconds and the gold by under a second.
He and McNally will undoubtedly be delighted to get the Worlds underway in such emphatic style for Ireland and to take away medals from a UCI Worlds.
Like McNally, Mackin’s performance today follows a patch of fine form that saw him take two silver medals in the National Track Championships last month.
While he was second behind Donal Bailey (Orwell) in the men’s sprint, it was his ride in the kilo that underlined his form.
The kilo title was taken by Martyn Irvine. However, the Olympic hopeful and An Post Ras stage winner was almost upset by Mackin.
Mackin pushed Irvine to the limit, posting a time of 1:09:37, just shy of Irvine’s 1:09:14. It would have been a valuable scalp for Banbridge CC man.
However, he now has a Worlds bronze in the bag to make up for being pipped by Irvine in the nationals.
We’ll bring you full results from Manchester today when we have it. A large Irish team has travelled, many of whom were in action today.
