McIntyre wins 100 mile title despite horrible mid-race injuries

Having romped to the Ulster 50 mile time trial (TT) title back in June, Sean McIntyre added the 100 mile crown to his palmares at the weekend.

However, his race was anything but straightforward with the champion having crashed with just over 90 miles done.

He hit the road very hard and took a huge amount of skin off his back and was also sporting a sling after the race.

However, after he crashed he battled back to his feet and got moving again to post a time of 3hrs 41mins 34secs on the Woodgreen course near Ballymena.

He was 2:37 faster than silver medalist Andrew Bye of Newry Wheelers, with Barry Hayes of Island Wheelers third fastest a further 1:04 adrift.

However, because Hayes was eligible for the Masters 40 title race, he was awarded gold in that event and the bronze in the senior race went to Mervyn Linton of host club Ballymoney CC.

McIntyre said after the event a combination of rumble strips and a pothole at a roundabout saw his hands bounce off the bars with eight miles remaining.

He lost control and came down hard but had enough in hand after 92 miles to get to the finish as best he could and claim another title.

McIntyre doesn't do things by halves, as his road rash reveals after the race. His was a great time irrespective of his crash but considering how hard he came down it was a phenomenal effort.
