Sean McIntyre was crowned Ulster 50-mile time-trial champion yesterday; going almost two and a half minutes faster than his closest challenger, John Madden (Dig Deep Inspired Cycling).
McIntyre, riding for Caldwell Cycles, stopped the clock at 1:43:28 with Madden crossing the line in a time of 1:45:53.
Bronze went to Mervyn Linton of Ballymoney CC in a time of 1:51:14.
Promoted by Maryland Wheelers, the Tommy Givan 50-mile TT doubled up as the provincial decider and a very solid turnout of almost 50 riders signed on for the event held on the out-and-back Woodgreen course.
A tough headwind from Ballymena to Dunsilly meant average speeds were down on the outward section but coming back to Ballymena the riders were doing upwards of 55 to 60kph.

Now in his sixth decade, John Madden has once again shown what a classy competitor he is. Above, on his way to taking six minutes off the national 100 mile TT record back in 2012 with a time of 3:45:05 (Photo: Marian Lamb – Cycling Ulster)
As well as McIntyre’s dominant showing in the elite male event – where he broke his previous personal best by just over four minutes - Ian Inglis and Aiden Reade set a national record in the tandem event, subject to official ratification from Cycling Ireland. They put in a fabulous time of 1:49:13.
Colm Cassidy Aquablue, though not competing for the Ulster title, made the trip north and finished second in the overall competition with a 1:44:33.
In the women’s contest local rider Eileen Burns BRC took the honours finishing with a fine time of 1:54:34 ahead of Judith Russell (Phoenix CC) and Lisa Cameron of Team Madigan.
There were also gold medals for Ballymena Road Club in the team category, Barry Hayes (IWCC) in the Masters’ 40 event, John Madden (Dig Deep Inspired Cycling) in the Masters’ 50 race and Sean Hargan (Phoenix CC) in the Masters’ 60 outing.
Madden was runner-up in the Masters' 50 race at the National Road Championships the weekend before last and really showed his versatility yesterday by taking silver in the senior race despite competing in the over 50s category.
