Less than a month after being involved in a potentially serious collision with a car while out training, Chris McGlinchey has won the eighth round of the Ulster Cyclocross Series in St Columb’s Park, Derry.
The ChainReaction Cycles man beat off the challenge of fellow U23 rider Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) and James Curry (Banbridge CC) after the seven-lap affair on a new course.
McGlinchey had it all to do after he came down on a tricky descent on lap two but he managed to remount, dust himself off and get back into the race.
Having finished in the top 10 last week, the 21 year-old Irish road international was easily the strongest, taking a tidy win even though Roger Aiken (Team ASEA) and Glenn Kinning (Kinning Cycles) were absent.
After regaining contact with the leaders after his fall, McGlinchey moved clear on the second last lap and managed to hold out until the finish with Moore the next man over the line.
Next week’s final round of the series takes the riders to Falls Park in Belfast for a race promoted by VC Glendale where the aforementioned Aiken will most likely be crowned the series winner.
Behind him is a right battle for second with Barry Kellett (Dromara CC) leading Graham Boyd (Xmtb McConvey Cycles) by a single point – 197 to 196.
